The Pioneer CDJ-200 is an entry-level deck, has all the necessary functions for those who just want to own one (or a pair for aspiring DJs). The front-feed style allows less clutter and accidental breakage of the traditional CD tray as CDs can be fed into the slot and press the play button. The silver jog dial is responsive, able to speed up or slow down the music easily according to the source track and pitch controller to make sure it stays that way with some fine tuning. When it comes to versatility, surprisingly the TASCAM CD-X1700 happens to be in that category. This pro-grade dual CD player has just about all the necessary functions that other manufacturers would have without being too complicated or unnecessary. The jog dial size is acceptable for normal and power mixes and rigid enough to scan the entire track for the proper beat although there is a slight delay when it comes to progressive scanning. The pitch control is acceptable, allowing an 8, 12 and 16% increase and decrease for most music there is. Formats include audio and MP3 playback, which the latter can utilize the 30 track program play. The TASCAM CD-X1700 also has a reverse play and scratch effects, but rendered useless due to the lack of a crossfader. Sample sounds can also be used for more imaginative and aggressive mixing especially for contemporary music.

One of the primary weaknesses of the TASCAM CD-X1700, is the vertical positioning, forcing the DJ or sound technician to sit down while performing his or her beats. Although designed for the professional mobile sound system, it can be used mainly for ambient sounds or nightclub scenes that doesn’t require a DJ to appear for the crowd.

The American Audio CDG 350 is meant for the professional, who livens up any social functions and parties behind the scenes. The CD controls and mixer are separate from the actual dual CD players, allows a customized DJ’s booth to be fitted in it. Standard controls include the CUE/PLAY buttons, pitch control with a ration of 8, 12 and 16% and master volume for both CDs. It also has a video fader control and composite video out to allow images to be switched from one to the other as well as a karaoke function. The jog dials are relative small, not meant for power mixing or progressive house music, while the tray feeder is something left to be desired yet still fast enough to eject the CD at a given time. The tempo lock is a plus for those who plays music at a higher pitch and speed without the vocals sounding like Alvin the Chipmunks are singing. The sound quality is passable, accompanied with a good equalizer, mixer and speakers.

The American Audio CDG 350 is a must have starter gear for those who wish to go into the professional sound business with great results.

The Numark Cdmix2 dual CD player and mixer incorporate all the necessary tools they needs to get started. Just plug it up to a pair of speakers and subwoofer (if any) and it’s ready to go. A more simplified layout is introduced to the dual CD player, front-feed slot, CUE/PLAY buttons, crossfader, pitch control and low, med, and high control knobs and equalizer on both players to control the bass and treble of any type of music. Probably one of the more interesting features of this player is its portability, as it also allows a 12 volt AC adapter to power up the player or to hook it up to a car cigarette lighter. Don’t expect the Numark Cdmix2 to scratch some music for hip-hop fans, but the small jog dials may prove to be a challenge for those who prefer perfection when mixing music.

Overall, the Numark Cdmix2 is perfect as a starter gear or as a backup system with the other current brands. If anyone wants to party on the sly, then the Numark Cdmix2 may be just for those who want the party, indoors, outdoors, or on the road.

The second in the line of professional audio CD players, the Denon DN S3500, brings about a more familiar setting for the veteran spinner, incorporating a direct drive motor similar to most modern turntables. The jog dial can be used to scratch, search, scan for segments of any CD for sampling and playback and has a nice feel to it like a turntable with a 33 or 45 rpm setting. Fifteen-second audio sampling and continuous loop would definitely be a hit for most DJs, as it allows more imaginative ways to bring the best on what is already considered as perfect music. The CD front-feeder is a plus, eliminating the need to have a tray and the time it takes to load a disc in especially if the music is needed in quick succession. As for formats, the Denon DN S3500 allows audio and MP3 playback and can use CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs for those who want to compile their music in a few discs.

Although the Denon DN S3500 is not meant for the beginner DJ, it’s a good investment for those who are already in the big clubs.

What for and Where can I use Pro DJ CD players?
Something tells me that if you are reading this page, you already know. But to answer this question….

Pro CD players can be used anywhere where music will be played on CDs and you need a reliable medium to play it. This can be at a club, at a house party, at concert, at a conference, at a theater, at church or other spiritual venue, and so on… Basically, where an average consummer player will die on you after a bit.

What kinds of DJ CD players are out there?
Since 1995 when I have been watching the pro digital audio industry, there has been three main types of pro CD players on the market. I say main because everynow and then something that does not fit in any category shows up, survives or dies. I guess that those will be rightly refered to as miscellanous.

Anyway, let’s proceed.

* Table top CD players: they’re the direct imitations of typical DJ turntables. They mainly feature a huge jig wheel to allow you get closer to controlling the CD manually

* Twin / Dual CD players: Usually include a rack mountable CD loader and the controller is a seprate unit that is placed next to the DJ mixer for easy access. The CD loader and controller are connected by a control cable. It’s almost like that the type of CD players found in cars. The controller is on the dashboard whereas the loader is in the trunk.

* Single Pro CD players: same as above but they’re not dual. Easy hey :)?

Isn’t CD DJ mixing cheap?
Cheap as in inexpensive? No? Ah, You mean “lame”?

Well that’s an opinion in many opinions in this world. I will not really go into this debate here. But I will just say that at the end of the day a DJ has to play music to an audience. The tools are just the means, people generally just want to hear music.

What are the advantages of DJ CD players over other gear say turntables for instance?
There are many function found on professional CD players that are reall great. Features as loop function, multiple cue capabilities, digital scratch and much more.

Of course, that crisp sound of vinyl cannot be reproduced.

What is the best pro dj cd player in the whole world?
That’s a question that I cannot answer because frankkly there is no answer to it! Think about it, every one that shares his opnion will base it from his experience with a particular Pro CD player. My advice to you is to just read about them or just stick with what most clubs and DJs consider as standard. By this I mean the Pioneer CDJ 1000 and the DENON DN-S5000. If you buy any of those two players, it will be a very safe bet as the standards tend to remain for years.

What is the big fuss about the Technics SL-DZ1200 DJ single CD Players anyway?

Yikes! that’s a long time to wait for this marvelous piece of DJ equipment. I’d heard from a semi-reliable source, that there were some defects which is probably the cause of the delay as Technics is prolly fixing them.
