Whether someone is opening a nightclub or going mobile, a DJs tools may vary, especially if they’re comfortable with the one they have. Most mobile sound systems would invite a popular guest DJ and what better way to disappoint one would depend on the current gear they might have.

When it comes to versatility, surprisingly the TASCAM CD-X1700 happens to be in that category. This pro-grade dual CD player has just about all the necessary functions that other manufacturers would have without being too complicated or unnecessary. The jog dial size is acceptable for normal and power mixes and rigid enough to scan the entire track for the proper beat although there is a slight delay when it comes to progressive scanning. The pitch control is acceptable, allowing an 8, 12 and 16% increase and decrease for most music there is. Formats include audio and MP3 playback, which the latter can utilize the 30 track program play. The TASCAM CD-X1700 also has a reverse play and scratch effects, but rendered useless due to the lack of a crossfader. Sample sounds can also be used for more imaginative and aggressive mixing especially for contemporary music.

One of the primary weaknesses of the TASCAM CD-X1700, is the vertical positioning, forcing the DJ or sound technician to sit down while performing his or her beats. Although designed for the professional mobile sound system, it can be used mainly for ambient sounds or nightclub scenes that doesn’t require a DJ to appear for the crowd.
